for November 4-6: German Films @ The Podium Cinema 2

4-6 November 2005 – The Podium Cinema 2
11-13 November 2005 – SM Baguio

The Goethe-Institut Manila, in cooperation with The Podium, SM Cinema
and Smart Communications, is proud to present three feature films
from Germany, all with a common theme: music and the youth. "Status
Yo!" is a fast-paced film that gives viewers a look at the Berlin
hip-hop scene. This part-documentary, part-film endeavor (all the
people onscreen play themselves and many of the events in the film are
based on real experiences) follows a number of people over the course
of a day in Berlin. There is Yaneeq, who is trying to organize one
of Berlin's biggest parties in just 24 hours. Tarek dreams of
turning Berlin into an enormous graffiti sculpture, while "Session",
a rapper, is trying to flee from debt-collectors and protect his
girlfriend. The fantastic breakdancers the 5AMOKS also make an
appearance, as well as many others. In one night and the following
day, the various strands of this story blend into a pulsating film
that celebrates all things associated with the youth: young love,
youth problems, their dreams, and, of course, their music.

"The Blind Flyers" follows the adventures of best friends Maria and
Inga as they audition for a school band in the hope of appearing on a
TV show. The two are just like typical music-loving teenagers,
except for one thing: they are blind. "The Blind Flyers" is a
refreshingly unsentimental film that promotes neither stereotypes nor
pity, it is simply a film that shows that the handicapped are truly
just like "normal" people. This inspiring film has won awards such
as the 2004 German Film Award for Best Children's Film, a special
mention in the 2004 Berlin International Film Festival, and a Euro
Kids Film Award in 2004.

What happens when 250 mostly underpriviledged children from Berlin
(all strangers to classical music) are asked to dance to Stravinsky's
"Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring)" as performed by the Berlin
Philharmonic Orchestra? The award-winning documentary "Rhythm Is It"
chronicles this extraordinary project led by Sir Simon Rattle, chief
conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and British
choreographer Royston Maldoom. The film is a delightful and moving
record of the fascination of music, of the need to safeguard
education and training, and of passion, diligence, love, esteem and
zest. "Rhythm Is It" is Germany's most successful documentary film
to date and is the winner of a 2005 German Critics Award, the 2005
Bavarian Film Award for Best Documentary, Audience Awards in
international film festivals in Minneapolis and Freiburg, and the 2005
Gibson Impact of Music Award of the Nashville International Film
Festival. Watch this film and see how "you can change your life in a
dance class".

Admission is free. For screening schedules and more information on
the films, please contact Ms. Paula Guevara of the Program Dept.,
Goethe-Institut Manila at 722 46 71 to 73 email: goethepr@pldtdsl.net.

Sepharad
Representación escénica

Dulaang UP tries its hand on another Spanish work, ''Sefarad'', freely
based on the novel by Antonio Muñoz Molina, one of Spain''s most
celebrated writers. Sefarad is the Jewish for Spain - Jews were
expelled from Spain in 1492, the same year Colombus landed in America
and Spain started to build up its Empire. The play mixes fiction,
history, and memoir and draws on the Sephardic diaspora, the
Holocaust, and Stalin''s purges to tell a twentieth-century story.
Shifting seamlessly from the past to the present and following the
routes of escape across countries and continents, ''Sepharad'' evokes
people real and imagined who come together in a pattern defined by
exile -- from Eugenia Ginsburg to Grete Buber-Neumann, the one on a
train to the gulag, the other to a Nazi concentration camp; from Primo
Levi bound for Auschwitz to the drama of so many Filipino overseas
workers scratching a life so far way from home. All voices of
separation, nostalgia, exile, and endless waiting. All voices born
from political and economic immigration -perhaps another form of
political exile.

It's ¡Fiesta! time

It's ¡Fiesta! time
By Liza A. Escoto
The Philippine Star 10/02/2005

October is Spanish Month In The Philippines, as Instituto Cervantes Kicks
off Fiesta, the month-long Spanish Festival for Culture and the Arts.

!Fiesta¡ is meant to commemorate Spain's National Day, which is celebrated
on October 12. This year's edition promises to be a truly exceptional
affair, with a variety of cultural events, live performances, movies,
culinary delights, art and photography exhibits, all featuring the best of
Spain's very own artists.

A unique dream not to be missed! Sara Baras is not just Spain's hottest
Flamenco dancer, she is contemporary flamenco's most famous star. The
34-year-old beauty is already considered an icon. Twice honored with Spain's
most prestigious dance award, the Premio Nacional de Danza, Baras has been
hailed worldwide for her intensity, brilliant choreography, and elegant
spirit.

Known for her ability to work her audiences into a frenzy with her powerful,
passionate dances and unbelievably fast footwork, Sara Baras is set to
perform on October 11 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Sueños
(Dreams), her acclaimed traditional flamenco show that made box office
history with a record-breaking five straight months of sold out performances
in Madrid.

Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras includes eight dancers and seven musicians. The
company has toured extensively around the globe and won many awards. Sueños
sees them returning to flamenco puro, the finest and most essential form of
the art.

Ongoing until November 6, Manila will be treated to a must-see photo exhibit
at the National Museum of the Filipino People: 150 Years of Photography in
Spain. This large exhibition places Spain in a leading position in the area
of international photography. The collection of 113 photos marks the
culmination of the ambitious work of Publio López Mondéjar, one of Spain's
most respected photo-historians. It shows the development of Spanish
photography-from its birth to the latest photographic trends. It includes a
meticulous selection of most outstanding images created by Spanish
photographers over the past century and a half.

In conjunction with these exhibits, Instituto Cervantes launched Manila, My
Manila Photo Contest, open to all photographers, professionals or amateurs.
The theme "Manila, My Manila" is taken from the words of National Artist
Nick Joaquin. This competition embraces all photographs whose subject is
Manila, resulting in a photo exhibit that captures the soul of the city from
different angles and varied artistic expressions. Two hundred qualified
entries fill the Greenbelt 3 Cinema lobby and ground floor until October 30.

The literary world is celebrating the 4th centenary of the first edition of
Don Quijote de la Mancha this year. To join this commemoration, Don Quijote
was chosen as the theme for the 10th Letras y Figuras. The winning entries
will be displayed in an exhibit next October.

More than two hundred participants came to the first Paint a Nook of
Intramuros: Pintura rápida on-the-spot painting contest held last year. This
overwhelming response deserves a repeat, open to all artists, enthusiasts,
and professionals alike, at the Puerta Real Gardens in Intramuros on October
15.

In collaboration with Hyatt Regency Hotel, Instituto Cervantes invites you
to enjoy the most authentic Spanish cuisine prepared by a Spanish master
chef at the Spanish Food Festival.

Dulaang UP turns to Spanish drama with Antonio Muñoz Molina's Sepharad, a
20th century story that draws on the Sephardic diaspora, the Holocaust, and
Stalin's purges. It goes on stage at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC
Plaza, Makati at 7:30 pm on October 21.

Prepare for another set of the best and hottest Spanish language films to
fill this year´s Pelikula: 4th Spanish and Latin American Film Festival in
Manila and Cebu. This must-see event will feature an unprecedented line-up
of 26 exceptional, award-winning films carefully selected from around the
Spanish-speaking world. The series includes Oscar winners for Best Foreign
Film, Mar Adentro (The Sea Inside) by Alejandro Amenábar and Todo sobre mi
madre (All About My Mother) by Pedro Almodóvar.

Moviegoers will have the chance to vote for the best film and win a free
trip. The festival runs until October 16 at the Greenbelt 1 Cinemas.

Acclaimed Spanish guitarist Jorge Orozco makes his grand comeback to the
Philippines, performing at Cagayan de Oro on October 2, and in Cebu City on
October 4. He will also conduct a guitar masterclass for advanced guitar
students at the Instituto Cervantes on October 6.

Armando Orbón, a celebrated classical guitarist, and jazz pianist Isaac
Turienzo will be playing in Manila with a repertoire by Latin-American
composers such as Granados, Tàrrega, Ariel Ramírez, A. Lauro, Albeniz, Falla
and J. Rodrigo, among others. They perform a night of music entitled Between
Two Shores at the Carlos P. Romulo Audi-torium, RCBC Plaza, Makati at 7:30
pm on October 8.

The culmination of Fiesta takes place on October 15, when the Spanish return
to Intramuros to revel in the Verbena Street Party at the Puerta Real
Gardens. Everyone is invited to join in the festivities. The previous
Verbena set a record with the largest paella in Asia, and this year guests
can have their fill of the quintessential Spanish dish as Verbena goes
all-out with a grand paella festival. Guests may also sample other varieties
of authentic Spanish cuisine prepared by the famed chefs of top Spanish
restaurants. A combination of music, food and fireworks make for a magical
Spanish night!

In line with the Instituto's mission to promote intercultural exchange and
artistic collaboration, after the success of the Semana de las Letras (Week
of Spanish Literature) held in London and Sao Paolo, Instituto Cervantes is
proud to bring this annual activity to Manila and further strengthen the
ties between the literary worlds of Spain and the Philippines.

Ten Spanish writers are set to arrive in Manila and meet with their Filipino
counterparts to discuss aspects of literary creation through colloquies and
round table discussions. The theme of the event is La huella y el viaje
(Traces and Journeys), and it will mainly focus on travel writing. There
will also be discussions on Filipino literature in Spanish, translation
issues in literature and the literary connections between The Philippines
and Spain. This activity will be held on October 24 to 27 in various venues
around Metro Manila, including the Rizal monument, RCBC Plaza, Greenbelt 3,
and the Instituto Cervantes.

The Instituto Cervantes is a public, non-profit institution founded by the
Spanish government in 1991 to promote and teach the Spanish language and
spread the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. Established in the
Philippines in 1993, it strives to provide Filipinos with an understanding
of Spanish culture and a broader view of the Hispanic world.

Fiesta would not be possible without the support of Lufthansa and Hyatt
Regency, and the assistance of 105.1 Crossover, Aboitiz, Agencia Española
Cooperación Internacional, Soluziona, Alba's, Casa Armas, CCP, the embassies
of Argentina, Chile and Mexico, Fuego Hotels, ICAA, Intramuros
Administration, Kamayan, Master's Touch, Nikon, People Support, Program for
Cultural Cooperation, RCBC Plaza, and Mapfre.

Oct. 16 & 17 = Esther Kaiser live in Manila

Celebrate German Month 2005 with Esther Kaiser! The Goethe-Institut
Manila, in cooperation with the Jazz Society of the Philippines,
invites everyone to watch and listen to young upcoming German jazz
singer Esther Kaiser perform songs from her debut CD "Jazz Poems" and
the forthcoming release "The Moment We Met".

Esther Kaiser will have two performances in Manila: a mini-concert to
be held at The Podium on Sunday, October 16, and a concert at the
Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium at the RCBC Plaza on Monday, October 17.
Both start at 7 pm. Admission is free and on a first-come,
first-served basis.

There will also be a special Music Workshop for jazz singers on
Sunday, October 16, from 230 to 5 pm at Wasabi. The workshop is by
invitation only. Those interested in participating should contact the
Goethe-Institut Manila at 7224671 to 73.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
ESTHER KAISER Profile:

Esther Kaiser was born in Freiburg, Germany. She made a name for
herself in the 1990's through her participation in a number of
projects: she sang with the National German Youth Jazz Orchestra, was
one of the founding members of the jazz vocal quartet "Berlin
Voices", and she finished at the top ten of the 1995 and 1997
editions of Germany's National Musical, Chanson and Song Contest.
Kaiser also has some experience in musical theatre.

Kaiser, an upcoming singer of the German jazz scene, is known for her
clear youthful soprano voice. She fronts the Esther Kaiser Quartet,
which is made up of bassist Marc Muellbauer, drummer Jens Dohle, and
pianist Carsten Daerr, who also plays the harmonica.

Like many other jazz ensembles, they mostly perform works by other
composers, including classics from the Great American Songbook ("Over
the Rainbow" and "Bye Bye Blackbird"), as well as some folk ("Black is
the Colour" from Ireland), pop ("Fragile" by Sting, "Eleanor Rigby" by
the Beatles), light classics ("Waltz" by Chopin), and even a lullaby
by German cabaret artist Hanns Dieter Hüsch ("Der Tag ist aus").
While a lot of the songs aren't new, Kaiser's interpretation of them
certainly is. Her arrangement of "Eleanor Rigby" is a case in point.
The Beatles' classic becomes a musical drama, swinging from crescendo
to contemplative mood and back again. The lyrics are familiar, but
the rhythm is very different, moving smoothly from strains of bossa
nova to funk. Here, the harmonica is used as a lead instrument as a
counterpoint to the piano. "Eleanor Rigby" shines through, but it is
a very different – and innovative – type of performance.

Kaiser also writes her own lyrics, not just for her own compositions
but also for instrumental works by other writers. This combination of
songs has definitely made her repertoire stand out from the rest.
Esther Kaiser has recorded 2 albums. Her debut "Jazz Poems" was
released in 2004. "The Moment We Met" will be released in early 2006.
